Eluned Parrott, Welsh Liberal Democrat Shadow Minister for Business and Enterprise, has welcomed statistics released today showing that unemployment in Wales has fallen by around 1,000 over the last three months.

The number of people out of work in Wales stood at 130,000 between September and November, down from 131,000 during the previous three months. However, people in Wales are still more likely to be out of work, with 8.9% of 16-64-years-olds unemployed.

Eluned Parrott AM commented:

"I am pleased to see that Wales has bucked the UK trend with unemployment falling over the last three months. There is a long way to go, but I wholeheartedly welcome these statistics. Wales now needs to build on this trend so that we continue the path of economic recovery.

"However, it is worrying to see that youth unemployment has continued to rise. We must not let a whole generation of young people be left behind. Unemployment can become a vicious cycle where it can become increasingly difficult to get back on the employment ladder. In the Government's 2011 final budget, the Welsh Liberal Democrats secured an extra £5 million towards creating over a thousand apprenticeships across Wales. This will provide essential skills based learning to not only equip our young people for the workplace, but also build our skill set across Wales."
